A PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE 42 ND ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY FOR ANIMAL PRODUCTION (NSAP) HELD AT THE LANDMARK UNIVERSITY, OMU-ARAN, KWARA STATE ON MARCH 27, 2017
I am delighted to welcome you all to Omu-Aran, Kwara State and to the 42 nd Annual conference of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production. This marks the second annual conference of the Society being hosted by a private tertiary institution, the first being the Babcock University in Ogun State.
As a Society which embraces all aspects of animal production and related disciplines, the membership of NSAP cuts across individuals and corporate bodies that are interested in animal production such as Animal Scientists, Veterinarians, Livestock
Economists , Livestock sociologists, Pature Agronomists, Feedmillers, Farmers and Students of Animal Science and related disciplines.
This Society, in pursuance her main objectives, has continued to provide forum to discuss issues relating to the promotion of all aspects of animal production in our nation, Nigeria. In every annual conference, NSAP, through its conference resolution has continued to influence government policies affecting animal production in our great nation, Nigeria.
The theme of our conference this year is “Emerging Challenges Facing Animal Agriculture in Nigeria and the Way Forward”. The conception of this theme is based on the current economic meltdown in Nigeria which is seriously and negatively affecting
Mr. Chairman, during this conference, our discussions will revolve around these challenges facing animal production in Nigeria and by God’s grace we will come up with practical suggestions that will help to move animal production forward in a dwindling
economy like ours. To achieve this, there has to be cohesive interactions between policy makers, scientists, farmers and all stakeholders that are in attendance to this conference.
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, with your permission, I would like at this juncture to highlight a few important events that would take place today at this opening ceremony. The Society will be conducting the investiture of Fellows on two of her eminent members. The two distinguished Scholars that would be conferred with the Fellowship of the Society are Professor S.E Bogoro, a Professor of Ruminant Nutrition and the immediate past Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and Professor G.
N. Akpan, a Professor of Animal Breeding and Genetics. This is the highest honour a member can receive for making remarkable contributions to field of Animal Agriculture.
At this opening ceremony, we would recognize two eminent traditional rulers, His Royal Highness, Oba Charles Oladele Ibitoye, the Olomu of Omu-Aran, our host community and His Majesty, Oba Muftau Gbadamosi, the Olofa of Ofa for their
outstanding contributions to human development in Kwara State and in Nigeria at large.
The Society will give Agricultural Leadership Award to His Excellency, Alhaji Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, the Executive Governor of Kwara State. The Society will also give Captains of Industry in the persons of Mr. Leye Alayande, the MD/CEO of Hybrid Feeds
Ltd, Motherhens Farm Ltd, etc., Mr. Ayodele Olusegun Alade, the MD/CEO of Dayntee Farms Ltd and Mr. Adebayo A Sangobiyi, the General Manager, Shonga Farm Holding Ltd, Kwara State. These Awardees have made visible marks in animal production.
The Society usually offers an Undergraduate awards to the best student of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine in penultimate year of study in the host institution as an encouragement to budding scientists. This year’s award would be received by Mr. Moyebi Temidayo John of the Department of Animal Science, Landmark University. The award
consists of a Certificate and the sum of twenty thousand naira (N20,000.00) only donated by Biacom Agro Nig. Ltd.
It has been the tradition of this Society to disseminate the research findings of its members and others in a highly rated journal, the Nigeria Journal of Animal Production (NJAP). Before the end of the opening ceremony, we would be launching volume 43, No.2 , 2016 edition, volume 44, Nos. 1 and 2, 2017 and supplement to volume 44 , 2017.
Mr. Chairman, permit at this juncture to congratulate all our members who since March last year have been elevated to positions of authority. These include those who have been appointed Vice-chancellors, Provosts, Directors, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments and those who have been promoted to Professors and Readers.
Before I conclude this address, Mr. Chairman, I would on behalf of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production, extend our sincere appreciation to the Government and people of Kwara State for the hospitality shown to our members attending this conference. I would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the Chancellor of our host institution, the great Man of God, Bishop David Oyedepo, the General Overseer of Living Faith Church, Worldwide and the host Vice-Chancellor, a great and humble achiever, an administrative pacesetter, Professor Aize Obayan, for the huge and outstanding support given to the Local Organizing Committee and indeed to the Society to make this conference a success. The Chairman and members of the Local Organizing Committee of NSAP Landmark 2017 deserve our hearty congratulations for putting together this colourful event
in spite of the harsh economic realities.
I appreciate the Fellows and members of the Society for their consistency in attending our annual conferences and their useful contributions to the Society.
